A method of the self
Shahid al-Thani
Kashf al-Ribah 'an Ahkam al-Ghibah
The method
The best-known Shia treatise on backbiting, and the only method here that is diagnostic rather than motivational. Most backbiting survives because the speaker does not believe they are doing it — 'I am only stating a fact'. A precise definition answers that in a way watchfulness alone does not.
How the app helps you keep it
You can follow this method for forty days. It adds 2 steps to your day, each one tickable, with the reasoning behind it a tap away:
- Test it before you speak — through the day
- Account for the tongue — evening
Each evening you write what happened and which defence held, so the forty days end in a record of your own pattern rather than a row of ticks. A slip is noted and never resets the count.
